Scholarships
The Minnesota Women's Golf Association's
Scholarship Foundation recently
awarded academic scholarships to
deserving young women in need of financial
assistance with their post-secondary
school education.
The five 2012 MWGA Scholarship
honorees include:
Rod Magnuson
" Somebody walked up to him after he
won that and said: 'Thanks, Rod. You winning
this gives hope to rotten putters everywhere,' "
says Pat Cutter, Magnuson's
former four-ball partner.
In the late 1980s, Magnuson was the
dominant senior amateur golfer in the
state, earning the MGA Senior Player of
the Year award three consecutive times, between
1986 and 1988.

Tom Garrett III
Tom Garrett III, 67, of St. Paul, also
passed away in August. Garrett graduated
from St. Paul Academy in 1963,
attended Duke University and received
his law degree from the University
of Minnesota School of Law in 1970.
Garrett was a long-time member of
Somerset Country Club, where he won
13 club championships. As a junior
player, he qualified for the U.S. Junior
Amateur in 1961 and 1962.
In 2001, Garrett won the MGA Senior
Amateur Championship at his
home course, by three shots over defending
champ Gerry Gruidl,
John
Berger and Robert Mattson.
" I don't play that much in these type

of events to feel comfortable, " Garrett
said at the time. " After yesterday [referring
to the 9/11 Terrorist Attacks], you
realize it is just a game. "
Erin Dingman Kimball, Minn.
Dingman went to Kimball Area High
School and is attending the University of
St. Thomas to study Biology for
Pre-Med or Business.
Marisa Keidel Waconia, Minn.
Keidel attended Waconia High School;
she is at the University of Minnesota
majoring in Biology.
Breanna Ten Eyck Shakopee,
Minn. Ten Eyck attended Shakopee
Senior High School and is attending
the University of Minnesota to study
Genetics, Cell Biology and Development.
Hannah Morgan Babbitt, Minn.
Morgan attended Northeast Range
High School and is majoring in
Elementary Education and Library
Services at St. Catherine University.
Katelyn Caron Eden Prairie, Minn.
Caron attended Holy Angels Academy
and is at St. Catherine University
majoring in Biochemistry.
The academic scholarship is $3,000 per
year toward undergraduate tuition, books,
and room and board.
" The young women selected have
consistently excelled in college, " says
Sheila Doran, MWGA Foundation director.
" Several have received their degrees in
three years and many of the 49 women in
14 years have gone on to post-graduate
studies. "
Recipients are selected on the basis
of academics, financial need and quality
of character demonstrated by civic and
academic activities, in addition to involvement
in the game of golf (although skill or
excellence in the latter is not a prerequisite).
