Tee it up! For Fun

T
eeing it up for fun is exactly what
retired pharmacist and avid golfer
Jim Clinite has been teaching beginner
golfers at both Braemar and Fred
Richards golf courses since 2007.
That year, Clinite, 70, of Chanhassen, began
running Deby Knutson's " Tee it up! For
Fun " adult-mentoring program. Knutson's
original goal for the program was for it
to be a " transition from the lesson tee to
the golf tee " that would encourage more
women golfers to stick with the game
after
Braemar soon found it a great feeder
program for women to join its leagues.
" Tee it up! For Fun " has three different
sessions throughout the summer, starting
in May and ending in August. Golfers take
three classes over consecutive weeks, with
each class lasting about two hours; they can
also opt for single night classes. The classes
are made up of a maximum of 20 students
and fi ve mentors, and they focus on teaching
basic golf skills and golf etiquette and on

fi nishing their original lessons.
giving students a chance to actually play in
real situations with an experienced golfer.
The cost of the three-week course is $12.
At the end of the sessions, participants receive
a free round of golf at Fred Richards
Golf Course.
" The money defi nitely pays for the skills
you will learn, " Clinite says. " You are also
getting a cheaper round of golf than what
you would have paid otherwise. "
Knutson formed the adult mentoring
program in 2005; although Clinite has been
running the program nearly as long, he's
quick to credit her for its success.
" She deserves a lot of the credit for this
program, by far the majority for getting it
up and running, " he says. " It was pretty easy
when I took over, being retired, to make
little tweaks to the program to improve the
outcome, and I think we've done that. "
Clinite will be mentoring adult beginner
golfers once again in the spring of 2013 and
is looking forward to helping the game of
golf grow even more.
