W
hen the blast furnace that
rolls into the Arizona deserts
in June vanishes in
October, the entire area
is transformed. Instead of
being a place you want to avoid, it becomes the
place you wish you could stay all winter long.
But that isn't just because of the weather.
There are inviting temperatures all over the
Sunbelt once the deep freeze grips Minnesota.
What separates Scottsdale from all those other
hot spots is a four-letter word: golf.
Maricopa County, including Scottsdale and
metropolitan Phoenix, boasts more courses
than any other county in America. But there
is far more to the equation than quantity. The
measuring stick is quality-quality of layouts
and design as well as quality manicuring and
beautiful scenery. The heavy competition to fi ll
daily tee-sheets among all of those courses in
Scottsdale is intense, which keeps club managers,
pros and course marketers eager to provide
the best product and services.
At one of those courses, not far from Scottsdale's
north side, about 80 percent of the members
are from the Midwest: Tonto Verde Golf
Club. The 36-hole facility showcases fabulous
views of lakes and the Four Peaks and Mazatzal
Mountains. Ken Kavanaugh designed the
courses with heavy bunkering and target golf
that requires more accuracy than power. Both
the Peaks Course and Ranch Course have nine
sets of tees, so no matter what your skill is, you
can have an enjoyable day. Those who are interested
in buying property can stay on a package
in a furnished townhome. The community offers
an assortment of activities, many of which
are at the elegant Santa Fe-style clubhouse that
includes a pool and spa, an 18-hole putting
course, restaurant and patio dining, and topnotch
fi tness center. The adjacent McDowell
Mountain Range and Tonto National Forest
offer trout fi shing streams and hiking trails for
those who want to fi t in more than just golf
while in Arizona.
The Westin Kierland Golf Resort and, a
Troon Golf managed facility in the heart of
Scottsdale, recently introduced golf bicycles as
an aerobic and fun alternative to golf cars. The
bicycles have smalldiameter
wheels, wide
rubber tires and two
custom-designed golf
bags mounted at the
back to carry a full set
of clubs.
According to Nancy Dickens, Kierland's director
of golf, " The new golf bikes are another
opportunity for us to make golf even more enjoyable
for those who enjoy the fi tness aspect of
riding on the course and who may want to trim
the time it takes to play a round. "
She estimates that it takes an average of just
an hour to play nine holes when riding the bikes.
