renamed the Ambiente Course, recently underwent a
$10 million renovation to make it more environmentally
friendly and improve visuals. The Padre Course
is undergoing some renovations, too: the 18th hole,
often voted the best fi nishing
hole in Arizona, is being tweaked
to make it a bit more player
friendly.

Troon North was carved out from among huge
boulders and the foothills of the mountains in north
Scottsdale, providing visuals that are hard to match
anywhere in the Valley. Its two layouts are perennially
ranked among America's best.
When the sun sets, there is much to do in Scottsdale
and the surrounding area. Scottsdale has every type of
restaurant you could imagine, from American steak
places and cozy little Italian restaurants like Uncle
Sal's (on Hayden Road) to my favorite, El Chorro on
Lincoln Road, which features some of the best indoor
and outdoor dining in the Valley. A tradition since the
1950s, El Chorro is the only eatery I know in town
that has a bocce ball court. Then there is a sprawling,
eclectic, sports-themed restaurant where all sports
fans must dine at least once: Don and Charlie's at
75th St. and East Camelback Road. Decorated with
priceless sports memorabilia, Don and Charlie's has
likely hosted every Major League baseball player who
has come to the Valley for spring training.
Although the Twins don't hold spring training in
Arizona, 15 Major League teams do, and you can
always catch a game at one of the many complexes
around the Valley in February and March.
Nightly, you can attend symphonies or Broadway
and Off Broadway shows at venues like Symphony
Hall, the Phoenix Theater, the Celebrity Theater and
the Orpheum Theater.
Not only will you not need your parka or your ice
scraper, but you also won't run out of exciting things
to do and see in Scottsdale-and you certainly won't
run short of fabulous golf courses to play!
