to a large grant from the Wadsworth Golf
Charities, a foundation dedicated to projects
that improve communities through the
moral, ethical and cultural codes embodied
in the game of golf. Still, the fund raisers
must hit the $1 million mark before Hazeltine,
which is providing about 100 acres
adjacent to its property just north of Pioneer
Trail, allows Andersen and company to
shovel the fi rst clot of turf.
Hazeltine's commitment to junior golf is embodied
in its long-running junior program and dates to the vision
of club founder Totton P. Heffelfi nger. The original
club layout included a short course between the fi rst and
ninth fairways, which is long gone. Hazeltine relies on the
Chaska Par 30, a Robert Trent Jones gem that is just down
the road and remains largely untouched since it was fi rst
opened in 1971.
" It's in the DNA of the club to have a vibrant
junior program, " says Andersen, referring
to the private club's popular community-oriented
junior program. About 400
youth participate in the summer program;
75 percent of those are non-member kids
from nearby Chaska and Chanhassen. Andersen's
vision for the LLH is to be a feeder
program for young golfers at the Par 30.
The LLH will do more than grow golfers,
says Andersen. With the help of turf scientist
Brian Horgan, it will help grow future
turf professionals as well. Two students in
the U of M's Turf Program will earn college
credit while maintaining the LLH's
bentgrass greens and fescue fairways. Fescue
is considered a sustainable turf requiring
less water and fewer chemical inputs.
Andersen hopes to move dirt in 2015
and have kids golfi ng on turf in 2016-
which will be a watershed year for both the
LLH project and for the larger Minnesota
golf scene. Hazeltine will play host to the
Ryder Cup Matches between team U.S.
and Great Britain-Europe, Sept. 27-Oct. 2,
2016. One of Andersen's goals is to lobby
the PGA of America to designate Learning
Links as the primary charity for the 2016
Ryder Cup. If a local sponsor with deep
pockets can be found to underwrite the LLH clubhouse,
it will make a valuable corporate hospitality venue during
the international golf event, says Andersen.
Andersen believes the golf community has to more actively
engage in attracting the next generation of golfers.
