A Sad Summer for Minnesota Golf

T
his past summer the Minnesota golf
community lost three important
people.
Bill Travis was a longtime member at
Hazeltine, a former president of the club,
the chair of the 2002 PGA Championship
and an MGA director.
Mike Zinni was the golf professional
and general manager of Mankato Golf
Club, an outstanding player with a long
record of playing accomplishments, a
former Minnesota PGA Section board
member and national PGA board member
and a 2012 inductee in the Minnesota
Golf Hall of Fame.
Jim Moore was the educational director
for the Western Golf Association and
There's an old cliché that goes, " golf
doesn't develop character, it reveals it. " It's
often trotted out as a truism in relation to
the pressures associated with playing the
game, but it applies outside the ropes as
well.
Most golf-related organizations and
golf clubs rely on a small staff and a large
volunteer base to carry out their missions
and deliver programs and services to
their respective memberships. The contribution
of time and talent of those volunteers
to delivering on those missions,
and more, cannot be overstated. Travis,
Zinni and Moore gave more of themselves
than most. And they did so without
looking for recognition or thanks.
The local golf community is a small
world where volunteers and staff all
work toward a common goal.
a key person for nearly 50 years in the
Evans Scholar Program and in the lives of
thousands of young people.
We sometimes take for granted the
people who truly make a difference in
our everyday lives. These three men were
all eulogized as good men, as husbands,
fathers and friends. In addition, what
stands out is that they gave so much of
themselves, significant time and talent,
serving the game we all love.
One was a club member who served his
club in several different leadership roles
for so many years; one a golf professional
who served his membership and made
the club a place his members loved to
go for the experience; and one spent
his entire adult life mentoring young
men and women through the process of
becoming Evans Scholars and working
with them through their college years.

They did so because they loved their club,
loved their profession and loved the kids.
They will be missed more than they could
have imagined.
As a member of a golf club or league,
many of you have no doubt served in
some unpaid volunteer capacity. Maybe it
was as a board member, handicap chair
or on a club committee. Many of you have
volunteered your time with the MGA.
The fact is, the local golf community is
a small world where volunteers and staff
alike all work toward a common goal-
to make the game and all that's involved
with the game-better.
The next time an opportunity presents
itself to serve the game, I encourage you
to step up and raise your hand. You and
the game will both be better for it.

Drive, Chip and Putt
Three local juniors were part of a group
of eight talented youth golfers who
drove, chipped and putted their way to
Augusta National Golf Club (home of
The Masters Tournament, and the 2015
Drive, Chip and Putt Championship,
April 5, 2015) at regional qualifying,
Sept. 6 at TPC Twin Cities.
Waconia's Connor Glynn earned the
qualifying spot for the boys' ages 1415
division; Brooklyn Park's Camille
Kuznik advanced in the girls' 10-11 division;
and Woodbury's Aayushi Sarkar
finished tops in the girls' 12-13 division.
The remaining qualifiers were Maxwell
Tjoa, Cedar Falls, Iowa, boys' 7-9;
Ryan Blair, Canada, boys' 10-11; Jordan
Jurmu, Marquette, Mich., boys'
12-13; Jessica Guiser, girls' 7-9, and
Emily Lauterback, girls' 14-15, both
from Hartland, Wis.

U.S. Amateur Four-Ball
Championship
Qualifying Results
The USGA's inaugural amateur
four-ball championships are scheduled
for May 2-6 and May 9-16, 2015,
at the Olympic Club, San Francisco,
and Bandon Dunes, Ore., for the
men's and women's championships,
respectively. Sectional qualifying was
held recently at StoneRidge Golf Club
in Stillwater Sept. 15 and 22, for men
and women; results are at mngolf.org.
