An abundance of courses through the center of
the state make for a memorable golf trip.
T
he stars at night are big and
bright . . . OK, you know the
rest. And that's where we are
heading: deep into the heart
of Texas, up the center of the state,
along the I-35 corridor.
Trust me, fellow golfers, there are
terrifi c courses all along the way-from
San Antone to Big D and beyond-but
here are some of the best.
Starting in San Antonio, you'll fi nd
the Alamo, as well as the number one
tourist attraction in Texas: Riverwalk-
a mishmash of bars, restaurants, shops
and hotels built along a winding section
of the San Antonio River, upon
which dinner is always served on touring
barges.
While those attractions are mustsees,
the TPC San Antonio is a mustplay.
The 36-hole facility, adjacent to
the property's 1,000-room JW Marriott
hotel, hosts the PGA Tour's Valero
Texas Open. Pete Dye designed the
Canyons course while Greg Norman
fashioned the Oaks course.
Canyons, the site of an annual
Champions Tour event, is probably the
more day-to-day course of the two-
more open, wider fairways, more hills
and spectacular views. The Oaks is
tougher-with tighter fairways, larger
greens and an abundance of trees-
but might be a bigger draw just because
it offers a PGA Tour tournament
experience.
Continuing north along the eastern
edge of the Texas Hill Country, the
capital city of Austin boasts memorable
dining and nightlife, and lays
claim to the title of " live music capital
of the world. " Austin is also inundated
with lakes that enhance the golf experience,
and the city's luxurious Omni
Barton Creek Resort & Spa is a prime
example.
Tom Fazio designed two of Barton
Creek's four courses (Foothills and
Canyons), while Ben Crenshaw designed
the Cliffside and Arnold Palmer
the Lakeside course. The facility is set
