You are a
champion
of the game
through your
membership
in the MGA.
t's that time of the year when many golfers
invoke the " leaf rule. " Rather than
take the stroke-and-distance penalty for
a ball lost in the leaves, they drop another,
play on and add a penalty stroke. No-you
won't find the leaf rule in the Rules of Golf
(and it's not condoned by any golf association-but
then again, neither is the mulligan).
Golfers will find a way to play with a
semblance of the Rules when faced with an
overabundance of loose impediments that
come with the season.
Frequent visitors to the MGA website,
mngolf.org, will recognize many of the golf
champions featured on pages 30-39, as most
appeared as lead stories- " above the fold " as
newspaper editors would call it-with links
to photo albums, news stories, scores and
videos. Thanks to the indefatigable efforts
of our news department-Mark Brettingen,
Mike Fermoyle and Nick Hunter-more
than 70 golf tournaments were covered in
person by a reporter and photographer, including
nearly all of the qualifiers and championships
run by the MGA and its allied golf
associations. Additional MGA staff and volunteers
made real-time scoring possible, and
thanks to Aaron Johnson and Alex Flasch,
we fed the social media pipeline (Twitter,
Facebook, Instagram and YouTube) with the
same content.
While the budget is modest, the effort is
extensive. At the end of the day, the news
crew put nearly 8,000 miles on the odometer,
motoring from Fergus Falls to Rochester
to Duluth and all around the metro. And
with all the news fit to be posted, it added up
to nearly 140 news and photo assignments,
more than a dozen video highlight reels, and
hundreds of postings to our news pages and
social media sites.
We never intended to be a news source,
but with changes in local media coverage, especially
of golf, it's what we do. The content
is free for anyone to read and enjoy-and we
try to leverage the content as much as possible
(like in the twice-monthly eRevision
newsletter that reaches more than 45,000
MGA members). We do it because it falls under
the overall MGA mission of promoting
the game of golf and its values for all golfers
in Minnesota.
But we couldn't write one word of news,
or publish one photo or tweet, without your
membership support. While your golf game
may not rise to the level of state champion,
you are a champion of the game through
your membership in the Minnesota Golf Association.
