ust look at the views! You'll never
be disappointed. "
I recalled those lines from journalist
Anna Quindlen when I fi rst
saw Tonto Verde Golf Club (tonto
verde.org). The views are absolutely
stunning on both 18s-The
Peaks Course, named for the Four
Peaks Mountains in the backdrop, and The
Ranch course, with its mountain views at every turn.
Tonto Verde is in the community of Rio Verde, in the desert
high country just north of Scottsdale. The Ranch Course
stretches out longer than The Peaks, but has generous fairways
that make it as player-friendly as it is scenic, with strategic bunkering
and water hazards adding to the task. The Peaks Course
rewards placement, with tighter greens and well-placed bunkers
and water hazards.
Those who have played Tonto Verde before will notice some
changes, as 14 bunkers have been redone-six on The Ranch
Course and eight on The Peaks-and two holes on The Ranch
have been completely overhauled.
SunRidge Canyon Golf Club (sunridgegolf.com)-tucked
in among extremely picturesque and dramatic stretches of the
Sonoran Desert, between the canyon walls and foothills of the
McDowell Mountains-is another scenic, highly entertaining
track. Bordering Scottsdale in Fountain Hills, it's ranked among
" The 20 Best Courses You Can Play " in Arizona by Golf magazine.
Recently completed renovations, under its new ownership,
have signifi cantly enhanced the landscaping and conditioning,
making SunRidge Canyon even more enjoyable and aestheticalMINNESOTAGOLFER

ly pleasing. But it's still challenging, especially with its " Wicked
6 " fi nishing holes. All 18 greens were expanded and regrassed
with a new Bermuda surface that allows softer landings and
faster roll. Fairway areas were signifi cantly expanded to make
the course more player-friendly.
When it comes to desert golf, the granddaddy is Scottsdale's
renowned Troon North Golf Club (troonnorthgolf.com), the
fi rst courses in the valley designed as environmentally friendly
desert target courses. Troon North recently marked its 25th anniversary
and is considered Scottsdale's crown jewel.
Troon North's two 18s-the Monument and the Pinnacle,
both of which feature smooth bentgrass putting surfaces-
meander through steep foothills and natural ravines in the
shadows of Pinnacle Peak. Sensational visuals include colossal
granite boulders scattered across the rugged Sonoran Desert
landscape. As with all Troon courses, the emphasis is on immaculate
grooming and a pleasurable, country club experience
for every player. Troon North's courses both rank among America's
" Top 100 Courses You Can Play " by Golf magazine.
Scottsdale is world-famed for fabulous golf, but these are
defi nitely three facilities that you won't want to bypass. MG
