A trip to Carlsbad reveals great courses and
a mecca of golf gear manufacturers.

cotland may be golf's birthplace, but Carlsbad,
Calif., is the game's modern home. This coastal
San Diego suburb houses many golf equipment
manufacturers.
The golf industry migrated here back in the
early 1970s, because of the city's relatively inexpensive
factory and offi ce space, and access to creative and
bright engineers and technology. But it's Carlsbad's mild weather-temperatures
rarely stray from the
50-to-80-degree range-that's especially
conducive to year-round equipment
testing on the course.
Callaway, one of the town's fi rst resident
golf manufacturers, welcomes visitors
when taping its popular Callaway
Live! Internet TV show. But even when
fi lming is on hiatus, golfers can schedule
clubfi tting sessions at the main
headquarters'
Callaway Performance
Center that features sophisticated
launch monitors.
Two blocks north lies TaylorMade and its Kingdom clubfi tting
center that's impressively stocked with technology and caters
to the brand's vast Tour pro staff. The company offers public
tours every Thursday. And just to the west is Cobra-PUMA,
which often attracts up-and-coming golfers to its indoor test
studio.
Roughly two miles east, Titleist engineers dream up all of
the brand's upcoming golf clubs, while its popular Titleist Performance
Institute is about 15 minutes north, and welcomes

Carlsbad also draws many vacationers,
and golf travelers specifi cally fi nd there may be no
more ideal place to bring their clubs.
The city's two most popular golf destinations
are undoubtedly Aviara Golf
Club and La Costa Resort & Spa. Celebrating
its 25th anniversary, the 7,007yard
Aviara (golfaviara.com) is widely
considered San Diego County's top
resort layout and ranks among America's
top 100 by many major golf publications.
It annually hosts the LPGA
Tour's Kia Classic and is perpetually in
outstanding condition.
A former PGA Tour venue, La Costa
(lacosta.com) houses the 7,172-yard Champions Course and
the 6,196-yard Legends Course-as well as a world-renowned
hotel and spa. Speaking of fi ve-star golf options, Pelican Hill
Resort (pelicanhill.com) lies an hour north in Newport Coast.
Its two courses-the 6,580-yard Ocean South and 6,945-yard
Ocean North-are collectively deemed by many locals to be
Southern California's best.
One visit to Carlsbad may well make it your own new personal
