Minnesota Golfer - Fall 2016 - 26

EPIC ADVENTURE
Day 3 Singles
In the day's most anticipated battle, Reed
and McIlroy traded punches from the
first tee shot through the entirety of their
heavyweight matchup (they would get to
5-under through eight holes). Reed birdied
16 and bogeyed 17 to carry a 1-up
lead to the final hole, where he birdied
the last to earn the U.S. its first point of
the singles matches.
" It's the first time I've ever played in
front of a home crowd, " Reed said. " To
have the team come together and, when
we're down, having these crowds picking
us up, cheering our names-it gets you
going and keeps you going. "
Another heroic battle between Mickelson
and Garcia ended, fittingly, in a
halved match, earning each side a ½
point. Combining for a total of 19 Ryder
Cup appearances, the pair also combined
for 19 birdies Sunday, with neither player
claiming more than a 1-up lead.
" It was a fun day. Probably a fitting
end, " Mickelson said of his match with
Garcia. " But I'm just excited that our
guys have played some incredible golf
this week. Real excited to be a part of this
team. "
Moore was 2-down after 15 holes, but
eagled 16 and birdied 17 to square up his
match with Europe's Westwood. A conceded
par at 18 clinched the point and
the Ryder Cup for the U.S. team.
Sunday's singles onslaught by the U.S.
created the largest margin of victory
since 1981, when Dave Marr and the U.S.
team claimed an 18½ to 9½ win at WalLAND
OF THE PASSIONATE GOLF FAN
Attendance for the week was officially forecasted as
250,000, but the actual number may have been closer
to 290,000. Boisterous behavior compelled the PGA of
America to issue a statement Sunday morning warning
that a " zero tolerance policy " promised to remove
disruptive, vulgar or profane spectators, and several were
ejected according to telecasters.

match with Patrick Reed.

Between the exceptional autumn
weather, the championship venue and
the quality of the competition displayed
by both sides, the 41st Ryder Cup exceeded
all expectations. The late Arnold
Palmer, who passed away just days before
the opening ceremony, would have given
it his trademark thumbs-up. MG
10th Junior Ryder Cup
The U.S. clinched its fifth consecutive
victory over the Europeans.
With a 2-point advantage following the first day of foursomes and
mixed four-balls at the 10th Junior Ryder Cup, the U.S.-led by Patrick
Welch, of Providence, R.I., and Emilia Migliaccio, of Cary, N.C.-dominated
the Europeans, winning eight of 12 singles matches to propel the
Americans to a convincing 151
/2 to 81
/2 victory Sept. 27 at Interlachen
Country Club in Edina. The 11th Junior Ryder Cup will be played at
Disneyland Paris in 2018.
