Cover Story
Today's headcovers not only protect-
they also tell a story. What's yours?

any aspects of golf in the past
20 years have been highlighted
by Tiger Woods-and you
could argue that fancy club headcovers
are among them. For years, I paid little
attention to headcovers until I saw the
big, bright orange tiger head on Woods'
bag (reportedly a gift
from his mother). Soon,
my young son needed
a tiger headcover, and
then came additional
animal headcovers,
a
wolf and a hummingbird,
for his siblings, to
match their individual
personalities.
To me,
headcovers
were for protecting my
golf clubs, not projecting
anything else. That
was until I received one
as a gift. In 2007 I interviewed
Jim Lange, former
host of " The Dating
Game " and first-ever
Evans Scholar from the
University of Minnesota
chapter. A year later, Lange returned to
the U of M for a reunion and was given a
Goldy Gopher headcover. When we met
afterward for a round of golf at Keller
Golf Course, Lange (who passed away in
2014) gave the headcover to me-and it
immediately became a prized possession.
I love telling others the story of its origin.
That's how it is with headcovers: they
can be a source of pride, hold special
meaning -or tell a good story. Padraig

rington's first Claret Jug. Anni Heck, the
current Minnesota state high school girls
golf champion, explained (see Minnesota
Golfer, Directory 2017) that her airplaneshaped
headcover represents her dad, who
works in aviation and introduced her to
the game. (Heck's father tries to secretly
replace the headcover
with something more
conventional, but Anni
always ensures a return
flight for the airplane to
her bag before a tournament.)
For
some golfers, club
headcovers represent a
strong connection to the
past, such as for Cleveland,
Ohio native and
" Backspin " author Mark
Craig. He recently came
across his old Cleveland
Browns headcover from
the '90s and stretched it
across the bigger driver
head he uses today.
" I
saw the headcover and
thought it would be
cool to show my allegiance to the worst
franchise in pro sports, " says Craig.
