thanks to a $120 million effort.
Designed by Spencer Oldham in 1895,
the restored golf course is a vibrant
museum of architecture, one of the fi rst
U.S. 18-hole courses. A.W. Tillinghast
cut it back to nine in 1912, only to have
Donald Ross expand it to 18 again in
1923. Ron Forse and Jim Nagle of Forse
Designs revived holes by all three; it's a
joyous history lesson in every round.
There's no question that the wellknown
resorts Greenbrier in West
Virginia and Pinehurst in North
Carolina qualify as " old-school. " But
another Omni property in Hot Springs,
Va., takes the antiquity honors, the Omni
Homestead Resort having been established
10 years before the American revolution.
The Homestead also has more
presidential
fi repower than Bedford
Springs: 22 U.S. presidents have visited,
stayed or played here, including William
McKinley in 1899 (making him, it is said,
the fi rst sitting President to play golf-or
at least the fi rst to admit it).
The Old Course was expanded from
six holes to 18 by-guess who?-Donald
Ross, and updated by Rees Jones in 1994.
But its fi rst tee remains the same, likely
the nation's oldest in continuous use.
The Cascade Course-a 1923 William S.
Flynn design-is the choice if you only
have time for one at The Homestead,
pondering that this is where Sam Snead
cut his golfi ng teeth.
Heading West
The stone wall out front says it all: " 1916
A. W. Tillinghast Historic Brackenridge
Park Golf Course. " Next to the Western
Open (1899) and Canadian Open (1904),
the (Valero) Texas Open is the third oldest
PGA Tour tournament, and from the
fi rst tilt in 1922 (won by Scotsman Bob
MacDonald), it was hosted 21 times at
Brackenridge in San Antonio. And who
do you suppose won the 1939 exhibition

Along with humidity, the place drips
with history, to the extent that it was
inducted into the Texas Golf Hall of
Fame in 1992. Then, in a neat 2008 twist,
the Hall of Fame itself was relocated to
the golf course grounds, the same year
designer John Colligan restored Old
Brack using original Tillinghast routings.
In winning the 2018 U.S. Senior Open
on July 1, David Toms added to the
celebratory mood at The Broadmoor,
marking the 100th year of this grand and
sprawling 5,000-acre mountain resort in
Colorado Springs. The original course
opened on July 4, 1918, laid out by that
overachiever, Donald Ross. Robert Trent
Jones Sr. added a second course in 1964
and today's East and West courses blend
the two.
