ore than a third of the strokes in an average golfer's
round are putts. So why don't we practice
putting more? Probably because it's not as fun
as smacking a driver all over the practice range.
But an increasing number of courses, particularly at resorts,
have invested in the radical notion that putting should be fun.
Their new putting courses take standard practice greens to the
next level.
If not a new idea, it's certainly a trending one. A host of dedicated
putting courses are suddenly popping up all over. While
taking the fl at stick out for nine or 18 holes on one of the courses
could be ticked off as legitimate practice time, the real emphasis
seems to be on value-added fun. It's not uncommon to see players
settle up bets after a round or start a whole new competition,
often with drinks in hand or children in tow.
But these are not miniature golf courses-there's nary a
windmill in sight-but rather rigorous tests of putting skill on
open ground. There are tee markers, along with an often-perilous
route to the hole over hill and swale, hollows and bends.
Keeping a Legacy Alive
There's little question that the inspiration for most of these
courses is the St. Andrews Ladies' Putting Club (standrewsputtingclub.com),
founded in 1867 when nine holes were laid out
in the Auld Grey Toon by Old Tom Morris. There is now an
18-hole course and a nine-hole track for younger players, all
hard by the Old Course, and all better known as The Himalayas.
The club has always been private, but play is open to the public
daily from April through September for the grand sum of
three pounds. (Play is complimentary for guests at all the resort
courses noted below.)
If a trip to St. Andrews would seem incomplete without a
round on the Old Course, it would likewise be incomplete without
a go at The Himalayas, which, it quickly becomes apparent,
is aptly named.
" The Himalayas is the standout, " says Scott Wilson, director
of golf at Streamsong Resort in Florida. He's played putting
courses at home and abroad, and now he can play The Gauntlet
at Streamsong (streamsongresort.com), a two-acre expanse
