Hanse-designed Streamsong Black Course. Hanse created The
Gauntlet as well. " Gil was trying to make some of the holes
exaggerated examples of what is out on the Black. One part of
the course has a fairly fl at area, and the other two-thirds have
varied degrees of swales and hillocks, " says Wilson.
The scorecard is blank and there's no course record because
the routing changes every day (as opposed to once a week at The
Himalayas). " Has it been popular? Let's just say that I recently
had my fi rst experience of booking a back-to-back double shotgun
tournament on a putting course, " says Wilson.
Making Upgrades
While he was hard at work on the No. 4 course do-over at
Pinehurst Resort (pinehurst.com) in North Carolina, Hanse
also redid the Thistle Dhu putting course. It also clocks in at
about two rippling acres (which, in case you were wondering,
takes about two and a half hours to mow each day). The name
stems from 1916, when Englishman James Barber had a mini
course built at his Pinehurst mansion. When the course was
done, he said " this will do, " and it was thereafter imprinted with
the misheard statement.
The new Thistle Dhu stretches about 80 yards directly in
front of the main Pinehurst clubhouse, and it's also right by the
familiar Putter Boy statue-the resort's logo.
" You can say it's 2.5 acres or 100,000 square feet, but when
you're out there walking on it you just say, 'Holy smokes,'
because the scale of it is crazy, " says Director of Communications
Michael Chupka, referring to the Punchbowl Putting Course
at Bandon Dunes (bandondunesgolf.com) designed by Tom
Doak with Jim Urbina.
Some of the putts are also very large. Doak says, " You will
fi nd every kind of putt you can imagine out there, and probably
a few you've never dreamed of. "
The course is near the fi rst tee of Pacifi c Dunes. After prepping
the regulation course for the
day, the grounds staff then
changes the routing at the
