t's easy to get caught up in the many attractions the city
of Charleston has to offer, from centuries-old historical
landmarks to world famous fi ve-star cuisine. And let's
not forget about the Atlantic Ocean beaches and endless
waterways of sport fi shing. The city (nicknamed " The Holy
City, " due to its more than 400 churches) is designated a top
travel destination with annual awards. Its restaurants are some
of the best in the world, and thousands of wedding parties make
" Lowcountry " a premier destination.
So, when it comes to golf in Charleston (charlestongolfguide.
com), it's no surprise that there are more than 20 semi-private,
resort and public golf courses to choose from, along with 10
private clubs that offer reciprocal agreements on occasion. The
local Charleston golfer takes pride in the golf courses not being
compared to the wall-to-wall courses of Myrtle Beach (90 miles
north) or the gated plantation courses of Hilton Head Island
(90 miles south). Instead, the area's golf is simpler, at sea level,
affordable and relaxing with a few hidden gems that make the
trip memorable.
A Multi-Century Tradition
Charleston's golf history began in 1746, but the game never really
caught on until the early 1900s. The Country Club of Charleston
had property downtown, but it didn't really gain roots until they
brought in Seth Raynor in 1925 to design the current 18 holes
across the Ashley River, which recently played host to the 2019
U.S. Women's Open. While the Country Club was being built,
Yeamans Hall Club-an even more private retreat 10 miles west
of town-was being built by Raynor simultaneously. Yeamans
Hall once hosted the 2007 USGA Senior Women's Amateur.
