2019 MWGA Foundation Scholars Honored
The Minnesota Women's Golf Association
Foundation Scholarship recently awarded
academic scholarships to deserving young
women in need of financial assistance with
their post-secondary school education.
The two 2019 MWGA Scholarship honorees
include:
Addison Hawkins, of Mora, Minn.,
graduated first in her class at Mora Senior
High School and is attending Winona State
University, where she is majoring in business
administration. Hawkins lettered in
three sports and captained the golf, volleyball
and Nordic skiing teams.

MALONEY
Shelby Maloney, of Kassan, Minn., graduated
first in her class at Triton Public Schools
and is attending the University of Minnesota,
Morris, where she is majoring in political
science and psychology. Maloney played
five years on the golf team, achieving allconference
as a sophomore and junior, and
captained the volleyball team, making allconference
as a junior and senior.
The academic scholarship is $3,000 per
year toward undergraduate tuition, books,
and room and board, and is renewable for
four years.
Recipients are selected on the basis of
academics, financial need, and quality
of character demonstrated by civic and
academic activities, in addition to their
involvement in the game of golf (although
skill or excellence in the latter is not a prerequisite).

class of 2020), let us know. Application
requests are taken after October 1, and due

Letter to the Editor
Dear Editor,
I enjoyed Rick Shefchik's recent article, " The Golden Age
Architects of Minnesota Golf. " I would like to clarify my comments a bit about White Bear
Yacht Club's design heritage. Based on the documents I have seen, I think it is important we
recognize the hand of William Watson in our layout. The most contemporaneous documents
about our course design state: " William Watson laid it out. Donald Ross gave freely of his
advice in its development and Tom Vardon, the professional at the club, was of great assistance. "
We also have newspaper accounts of Ross visiting WBYC in 1916; an earlier visit to
discuss the course layout in general was described in a 1961 club history. Vardon, who arrived
at WBYC in 1916, couldn't have been involved in the layout, as the course opened in 1915.

World Handicap System to
Debut January 2020
The result of a collaboration
between the world's six
handicapping authorities,
the World Handicap System
is set to launch this coming
January, and is intended
to enable golfers of differing
abilities to have a game
in any format, on any golf
course anywhere in the world.
MGA members will likely see
little difference in their existing
USGA Handicap Index,
but important new features
of the WHS will ensure a golf
handicap is more reflective of
potential ability. The changes
include:
* A minimal number of
scores (54 holes) to
establish a new handicap;
* Daily Handicap Index
revisions;
* Maximum Handicap Index
of 54.0 regardless of
gender;
* A new calculation factoring
abnormal course
conditions and weather
when they may impact
player performance.
