RULES PRIMER
The " Do-Over " Shot
A provisional ball can be played under specific circumstances-
here's what to know.

A
t some point, we've all had to " reload " after launching
a ball out of bounds (OB) or into parts unknown; i.e.,
the ball might be lost somewhere on the golf course
other than in a penalty area. That " reload " is what the Rules of
Golf calls a provisional ball.
This is meant to save time before going forward to search
for the original ball, and it removes the need for a return trip if
the original is lost and the stroke-and-distance penalty applies.
You may play a provisional ball after going forward to begin the
search, provided the three-minute limit has not expired; if the
original ball is found within three minutes, it must be played.
You must clearly state your intention: Saying that you are
" playing again " or " playing another " -examples given in the
Offi cial Guide to the Rules of Golf-is not explicit enough.
Calling it a " provisional, " announcing that you're playing a
ball under Rule 18.3 or saying, " I'm going to play another just
in case " are all considered adequate. Not clearly stating your
intentions, or worse, saying nothing, are considered putting a
ball in play under stroke and distance.
A provisional ball may be played if the original ball might be
in a penalty area, but it might also be lost outside the penalty
area, or OB. However, if a penalty area is the only place the ball
could be, playing a provisional ball is not an option.
You may play the provisional ball several times, as long as it is
played from a spot that is the same distance or farther from the
hole than where the original ball is estimated to be.
The provisional ball must be abandoned when the original
ball is found on the course before the three-minute search time
is over, or if the original is found in or is known or thought virtually
certain to be in a penalty area. In cases of the latter, play
the ball or take penalty relief under Rule 17.1d.
And fi nally, take care to mark the provisional ball so that it
can be identifi ed if it is hit into the same area as the original ball
or a subsequent provisional ball. Woe to the player who cannot
distinguish one ball from the other.
As an aside, playing a provisional ball negates the option of
Local Rule E-5, the alternative to stroke and distance for a lost
ball, if E-5 is in effect. Fortunately, if both the original and provisional
are lost, E-5 is an option for the provisional ball.
