for play in 1994 and is private. Guests typically arrive in groups
and play 36 holes a day.
" A busy day on the golf course may feature 40 golfers, " says
Tom Smith, MGA President. " You bring your game up to the
course, " he adds, explaining that no one arrives at the remote
golf club looking for a game.
" The club employs local people (from nearby Mullen, pop.
500), who are very friendly and welcoming, and offer top-notch
service. The locals lend an unpretentious, down-to-earth air to
the club.
" The golf is really good, " says Smith, adding, " but we come
for the food. "

PINEHURST, N.C.
" The golf and hospitality are second to none at reasonable
prices, " says Rob Tennant, an MGA past president and
current USGA volunteer rules official. Tennant notes that most
stay-and-play packages at Pinehurst Resort's famed Carolina
Hotel include meals. Don't pass up the breakfast at the Carolina
Hotel, he advises, " it's fantastic. "
There are more than 30 golf courses in the PinehurstSouthern
Pines-Aberdeen area. Tennant says the resort, home
to nine golf courses, including the famed No. 2, plus The Cradle,
a new short course designed by Gil Hanse, is ideal for a variety
of golf groups, from couples to buddy groups of both genders.
And there is the Pinehurst Golf Academy. Students take
instruction in the morning under the direction of Eric Alpenfels,
and play golf in the afternoon with an instructor. Although
Tennant says the academy is demanding, he is planning to
return to Pinehurst in the spring with his wife, Julie O'Brien.

ST. ANDREWS, SCOTLAND
Although part of a larger golf trip to Scotland which
included " bucket list " links courses such as North Berwick,
Muirfield, Turnberry, Prestwick, Royal Dornoch, Cruden Bay
and Castle Stuart, Don Roberts, an MGA regional club ambassador
from Rochester, preferred his time in St. Andrews.
" We spent several days in St. Andrews [and] even had a day
off the golf courses to see the sights, " which included Old Tom
Morris' grave, and an evening at the Dunvegan to watch a production
of " The Scrapbook of Old Tom Morris, " performed by
David Joy.
" It was a great trip. Our group [four golf couples] traveled very
well together [and] the dinner and hotels were excellent. " Roberts
did confide that on the day the men played the Old Course via
lottery, the women played the Castle Course just outside of town,
and beat them for fewest putts taken on the greens.
