Otis Dypwick
Golden publicist enters Minnesota Golf Hall of Fame.

efore big money entered intercollegiate athletics, there
was Otis J. Dypwick, the long-time sports information
director for the University of Minnesota athletics
department. On Friday nights before Gopher football
home games at Memorial Stadium, Dypwick would
entertain visiting team coaches, staff and media. Head
Coach Murray Warmath would show up to chat with the opposing
team's head coach, and Dypwick would be on hand to make
introductions.
Back in those days, Cooke Hall was home to intercollegiate
athletics, intramural sports and recreation, and physical education,
and that suited the coaches just fine.
" Cooke Hall was a real hub, " recalls intramural sports
program director Roy Tutt. It was home to an exhibition
pool, classrooms, locker rooms, workout and training rooms,
a gym on the third floor, and the offices of the athletics staff,
including the sports information department and intramural
sports, whose windows looked down on the open end of the
football field. Warmath, who led the Gophers to the national
title in 1960 and back-to-back Rose Bowl titles, ruled the roost
in Cooke Hall in those days.
" Otis handled him with kid gloves, " says Tutt.
Dypwick, a graduate of Minneapolis Washburn High School,
grew up near fellow Miller alumna Patty Berg. He made his
mark early in the world of golf by co-authoring Berg's first
book, " Golf, " in 1941. The book included a foreword by O.B.
Keeler, a nationally recognized authority on golf and the chronicler
of legendary amateur champion Bobby Jones. Berg, of
course, had made a spectacular splash on the national golf scene
by getting to the finals of the 1935 U.S. Women's Amateur held
at nearby Interlachen Country Club. She would win the championship
three years later, be named the AP Female Athlete of
the Year three times and collect 63 LPGA Tour titles, including
15 majors.
Perhaps because of the collaboration with Berg, Dypwick
seems to have cornered the early market on golf books by famed
golfers including Byron Nelson's " Winning Golf, " which sold
90,000 copies, Gene Sarazen's " Want to be a Champion? " and
" How to Break 90 in Golf, " with Lloyd Mangrum. Dypwick's
friendship with Nelson produced a series of successful instructional
lesson pamphlets used as marketing materials, which
in turn, spawned collaborations with the likes of Sam Snead,
Arnold Palmer, Billy Casper, Julius Boros, Cary Middlecoff, Gene
Littler, Doug Sanders, Dow Finsterwald and Gary Player-the
latter two would pen letters of recommendation for Dypwick's
nomination to the Minnesota Golf Hall of Fame.
