area than it ended up costing them to have
the reconstruction on the course and the
levee done. So the city saved money, and
we think it saved us by putting those greens
(above fl ood stage). "
The levee construction began last summer;
thanks to cooperative weather in
2012, Duininck Construction was able to
fi nish everything that they had planned to
complete. The construction will ultimately
affect seven holes on the back nine, increase
the yardage of the course by 145 yards from
the back tees and actually improve the challenge
and play of the 75-year-old course.
Highlights of the changes include eliminating
hole No. 11 (which was
located
near the river and often underwater) and
replacing it with a practice chipping area;
changing the par-5 No. 13 to No. 12 and
making it a long par 4 (465 yards); moving
the 10th green to the southwest and raising
it four feet to above fl ood level (which will
be completed this summer); and converting
the short par-4 No. 16 (becoming No.
15) into a long, S-shaped par 5 (540 yards),
including a two-tier green with water both
right and left.
Murphy says the jewel of the renovation
is the new par-3 No. 16 that was created by
removing all the dirt from a cattail slough
formerly located in the middle of the back
nine. The dirt was used to create four tees
that lead to a new island green 135 yards
away (and 40 feet downhill) in the old
slough area. The old 16 green remains, so
both greens can be used alternately (the
original playing at 175 yards from the back
tees).
Mulder says that the old 16 green, which
sloped back to front, will now be approached
from the opposite direction and
have a redan green effect.
The renovation has not been without its
challenges, Goldstrand says. Incorporating
a levee into a course so that it looks seamless
was challenging-but the bigger obstacle
was making sure the members constantly
had 18 holes to play.

( Did You Know?
At press time, there was a 50 percent
chance of the Red River reaching 38 feet
this spring. At that level, it would affect the
old No. 11, which will be converted into a
practice chipping area after this season.
