" It turned out to be quite a complicated
procedure, " Goldstrand says. " But
it was only complicated because of the
timing for things to happen. If you were
to go to the course, you might say that
looked pretty easy. And in a sense it was,
because they had some existing land
where we could do this adjustment on
the holes. But they were able to improve
the course noticeably on the back nine. "
Another challenge occurred with the
course's landmark. The green on No. 14
was shaped like the state of Minnesota,
and the new levee came too close to it,
so it had to be moved. Goldstrand rebuilt
the green in the state's shape and endeavored
to make it even more recognizable.
" You would definitely notice the shape
if you were looking for it, " Goldstrand
says. " We've got that point up in the
northeast corner in Minnesota that's too
pointed to put in directly like it is, so a
little shaping could get lost there over the
years. But I actually tried to put in Lake
Superior, also. I do have some water in
there, but it's a pretty tiny Lake Superior. "
While few will want to hit into a Great
Lake-sized water hazard, the membership
is excited to get on the new course.
" They're thrilled about it because it
gives us a totally different look on our
back nine, " says Murphy. " We had some
inherent problems that have been addressed
with all the new changes on the
golf course. So, our membership couldn't
be more excited-and our membership
is growing because of all of this. " MG
