Two renowned Minnesota golf courses reopen this season, which is
W
hile new course openings are no longer a springtime ritual in Minnesota, course
re-openings are good news. In 2014, we have news of two courses that shut down
for a time but will be ready for play again this season. One course, historic Keller
Golf Course in St. Paul, opens after an 18-month hiatus for planned renovations,
updates and course changes; the other, Mississippi National Golf Links
in Red Wing, is being resurrected after a season of uncertainty.
Both municipal courses are unique and valuable
assets to their communities, and the people who have
played at them for years will get to do so again this
season. That great golf is
worth saving and the
game's history worth
preserving could be
seen as a harbinger
for the game going
forward.
The 85-year-old course reopens in Maplewood this summer
ne of the unique aspects of golf is
the ability of participants to play
the game in the places where the greats
have competed. Amateurs can't play
baseball in Fenway Park or football at
Lambeau Field. But in golf, they can play
from the same tees where the biggest
championships were contested-and in
Minnesota, it can happen at the recently
renovated Keller Golf Course.

has welcomed the greats since opening in
1929. But the 85-year-old course, which
hosted three national tournaments (the
1932 and 1954 PGA Championships and
the 1949 Western Open) and two former
pro tour stops (St. Paul Open and the
Patty Berg Classic), became in need of
restoration.
" The old girl was tired, " says course superintendent
Paul Diegnau. " She needed
a facelift. "
Since October 1, 2012, Keller has been
shut down. It is now set to reopen in
late-June or early July, depending upon
the grow-in. The $12 million renovation
project features new tees and rebuilt
greens, bentgrass turf throughout,
bunker renovation, a new irrigation and
drainage system, a new clubhouse and
pro shop and some tweaks to a layout on
which greats such as Kathy Whitworth
and Sam Snead have won.
