tion) was to update the course and retain
its character and connection to its
storied history. Certainly it was a unique
challenge.
" Keller is probably the most historic
golf course I've ever worked on, " says
Mandell, who has been in the golf architecture
business since the early 1990s. " I
didn't take that lightly. "
Mandell worked to recapture some of
the course's original design in his restoration.
Over the years, Keller had gone
through partial renovations; as a result,
there was a mish-mash of styles and
looks to the course.
Mandell brought bunker and green
locations more in line with the original
design. He rebuilt some of the greens,
added 109 yards to the course, squared
off the tee boxes and redid all the bunkers
(adding a few more). One goal was
to create a consistent look throughout
the course.
" The third green was rebuilt in the early
'90s, and it really didn't fi t with the rest
of the course, " Mandell says. " So we got
an aerial photograph from about 1940
and utilized that to guide us a bit. There
were fi ve or six bunker styles. So we fi xed
that inconsistency and [created] naturallooking
shapes that are easily maintainable
and with just enough sand fl ashed so
that golfers understand there's a bunker
ahead. "
Changes to the course layout were
minimal-but signifi cant. Golfers returning
to Keller will notice one on the
fi rst tee. The tee, which was atop the hill
outside of the former pro shop, is now
down the hill and to the left. The hole
remains the same length, but the right
angle dogleg turn has been eliminated.
Changes were made at the clubhouse
turn for playability and safety's sake, and
as a result the par-5 9th and par-4 10th
fl ip-fl opped their pars. Subsequently,
the course becomes a 35-37, which isn't
ideal, but Mandell believes it improved
each hole.
No. 16 (a par 5/4) becomes a fi ve from
every teeing area, as a hill golfers formerly
had to hit over from the back tee was
removed. An alternate forward tee (of
about 100 yards) was added to the par18
