Meanwhile, the RWMGC raised $400,000 (which included a $200,000
matching grant from an anonymous donor) to help reopen the course. They
received fi nal approval to assume management on January 11. " We've got a
tight timeline-and we know it-to get the kitchen up and everything else going, "
Pinsonneault says. " We needed that approval to start going forward. "
The city will pay to bring the facility up to code, but its hope is that RWMGC
will be completely self-sustaining within fi ve years. " It's $210,000 the fi rst of
fi ve years, but every year drops down 25 percent, " Red Wing city councilmember
Jason Sebion says. " By that time we hope it is self-sustaining and bringing
in enough revenues to cover all the costs. It's ambitious, but I think it can be
done. "
Even before receiving approval, the RWMGC brought back longtime
Mississippi National superintendent Randy Juliar. In January, they hired
golf professional Nathan Gale and started prep work for leasing golf carts,
maintenance equipment and a stove for the clubhouse kitchen.
Plans for the course include opening all 36 holes and the range, running
the clubhouse and opening its kitchen-initially, on a limited scale (hot dogs,
brats, snacks, etc.). There are also plans for the Red Wing High School golf
Keller GC
teams to return, plus an expansion of the youth golf program.
The biggest challenge will be bringing golfers back. Mississippi National
had 200 members before closing; 176 of them moved down the road to Mount
Frontenac GC, 20 to Gopher Hill GC in Cannon Falls, and four to Red Wing CC,
which will become a public course this season. But Pinsonneault, who is copresident
of the women's league at Mississippi National, feels the golfers will
return.
" The other courses that they went to are 15 miles away, " she says. " They will
want to come back to a local course. I'm a little biased, I'll admit, but I think
we've got a pretty special course. "
The RWMGC joined the chamber of commerce and has been working with
Red Wing businesses on plans for stay-and-play packages. In addition, they
are working on a number of " beyond golf " activities (cross-country skiing,
snowshoeing, hiking and biking) at the 425-acre course.
" We have been working with the local Environmental Learning Center, which
has youth ecology classes, " Pinsonneault says. " The lowlands course runs along
a wetland area; the highlands course on the bluff has great views, and we have
more than 90 birdhouses for an Audubon Sanctuary certifi cation-which we're
going to apply for. "
The " beyond golf " activities will help create and strengthen the bond between
