nlike a good golf swing, this winter just won't
seem to " release " us. I hear all the talk about
spring starting, but as I write this in late March,
it still looks like a winter landscape outside. I hope this
issue finds you happy, healthy and finally out golfing
(locally). As I age, I'm starting to think our snow birds
have got this whole thing figured out. I may become one
sooner than later.
In my travels, I'm often asked about MGA's role in supporting
and administering the USGA
Handicap System. I can tell you that
the system works well when it is used
correctly. It enables players of differing
abilities to compete on an equitable basis.
Most golfers have a valid handicap,
and they own it like a fine shirt. It's part
of their identity. Unfortunately, we all
know someone who has a vanity handicap
or is the dreaded sandbagger.

or not, erode the enjoyment of our beloved
game. It's never fun knowing prior to a match that
you are going to get clocked or win handily just by showing
up. It's a lot more fun needing that eight-footer on
the last hole to win the match or continue the fun. What
about going into the second day of a net tournament with
any of the teams entered having a
chance to win?
As you play in a close competition,
your heart rate rises, your breathing
becomes more sporadic and your
body starts to shake. Somehow, you
pull the trigger on your shot and
your fate is cast. It's more exciting
knowing that you and your opponent
share an equal shot at glory and
that skill or a quirk of fate will carry
the day rather than the insurance
bought with a managed handicap.
Have you noticed that to be a member of the MGA you
have to be a member of a league or club? One of the underpinnings
of the handicap system is peer review, which
assures that we maintain the level playing ground we love.
I take this responsibility very seriously and know you do,
too.

who can help (thanks to the support
of your club or league membership).
Just give us a call.

as strong as our members make us.
