he USGA's newest manager
of competitions,
Liz Carl, knows her way
CARL FILE
around the Rules of Golf. Since
April 2012, Carl, 23, has answered
thousands of rules questions from
golfers all around the country. In
fact, she and another rules associate
together handled 10,000
Rules of Golf questions through
emails, letters and phone calls
from golfers, golf professionals
and state and regional golf association
staff (including the MGA's
own Doug Hoffmann). Since her playing
days at Henry Sibley High School, where
she had a stand-out senior year in which
she won nine consecutive tournaments,
fi nishedthird in the AAA State championship
and won the MGA Mixed Amateur
Team overall title with older sibling Mike,
Carl knew her future lay in the competitive
side of golf.

Knight for Rutgers University, Carl landed
at the USGA, located in nearby Far Hills,
N.J., where in addition to taking rules
questions, she processed hundreds of amateur
reinstatement applications.

Liz Carl: USGA Rules Guru
Carl was recently promoted
to manager of competitions for
the Curtis Cup in St. Louis, Mo.,
and the U.S. Women's Amateur
Championship on Long Island. At
the former she serves as captain
for the practice sessions, matches
and all team logistics. At the latter
her duties fall mainly outside
the ropes.
Although she claims to have
moved up to the forward tees, she
remains no less competitive than
during her prep and college days.
She won the 2013 NJSGA's Mixed Pinehurst
Championship with co-worker Adam
Karnish, both playing out of the Moggy
Brook Golf Club, a club without real estate
given the mythical moniker for the
USGA headquarters campus in Far Hills.
" I always dreamed of working in the
game, " she explains, adding that opportunities
abound through state and regional
golf associations, local PGA sections, golf
facilities, the First Tee chapters, the professional
tours and national golf organizations
like the USGA.

and outside the ropes.
