he river towns on the south shore of the Mississippi
aren't just great places to hit the green-they're also
historical and cultural hubs, with plenty of Main
Street charm and local arts and events to fully satisfy
your trip. Don't even get us started on the views.
In Red Wing, Mississippi National's comeback story
continues (Minnesota Golfer, Spring 2014). Following hardships
that forced the course to shutter its doors in 2013,
it reopened last spring, thanks to $400,000 raised by the
Red Wing Municipal Golf Corporation. Its Highland and
MINNESOTAGOLFER Spring 2015
Lowland par-71 courses keep its MGA membership swinging.
Across town, Red Wing Golf Club's classic shot-shapers
course celebrates its 100th anniversary this year (see sidebar
on page 16).
Just down Highway 61, Mount Frontenac's uber-scenic
par-71, 18-hole course is perched on a mountain, where wild
turkeys roam and billy goats could. Architect Dr. Gordon
Emerson, who also had a hand in Lake Pepin Golf Course,
created a quality golf test with affordable green fees-and
breathtaking views of bluff country.
