makeovers of local courses.

T
he golf course industry is no longer
in the boom time of the '90s, when
courses were popping up like craft
breweries are today. It's now more
important to improve the courses that exist,
and two big names in Minnesota golf are doing
just that.
The principles at both Olympic Hills Golf
Club in Eden Prairie and Grand View Lodge's
The Preserve in Pequot Lakes understand that
continuous improvement is necessary to catch
the eye of the golfi ng public, and both set out
recently to enhance the golfi ng experience for
their patrons.
The impetuses come from different places,
but the results are the same-better golf in
Minnesota. Here is a sneak preview of what
you will see later this summer.
Olympic Hills Golf Club
In 1969, local car mogul Rudy Luther was part
of an ownership group at Olympic Hills GC,
and in 2011, his sons Dan and David Luther
bought out the remaining partners and took
over full ownership. It was about that time
they set out to renovate the course and create,
in Dan's words, " a unique experience " for his
members-starting from the ground up.
" The golf course irrigation system was 35
years old and the bunkers needed to be replaced-that
prompted the renovation, " Dan
says. " The greens were old pushup greens and
pretty susceptible to winters-they were holdHole
10 at The Preserve
