Junior Golfers
If you're searching for options to introduce a youth to the game,
this calendar is a great place to start. National initiatives like The
First Tee; Drive, Chip and Putt; LPGA-USGA Girls' Golf and the
new PGA Junior League (team vs. team scrambles) offer local programs
for kids. Likewise, many of our public golf courses run their
own lessons and leagues designed for kids, so checking with your
local course is usually a good choice.
According to the National Golf Foundation, junior golf participation
has fl uctuated between 2 and 3.8 million kids (ages 6-17)
since 1985, with the most recent fi gure tagged at 3 million (2013).
While the MGA does not track junior golfers, an anecdotal estimate
comes to 25,700 youth participating in organized junior
programs through the Three Rivers Park District, The First Tee
(Minneapolis, Rochester and St. Paul), the Minnesota State High
School League, the Fairway Foundation and four public facilities
(Braemar, Chaska/Hazeltine, Rush Creek and Victory Links). No
doubt the statewide fi gure is much larger.
Organizers of the recent Minnesota Golf Show were able to donate
$4,000 to The First Tee Foundation. 2nd Swing, one of the
show exhibitors, has donated junior golf sets to the Minnesota
PGA and The First Tee (they also support Folds of Honor and Tee
It Up for the Troops). You can donate golf clubs through The First
Tee Rochester, which 2nd Swing helps turn into " cash for junior
golf. "
