A
fabulous new golf season is upon us, and with
it comes another opportunity for each of us to
shoot our career best-or try to hit our " target
score " (see Editor's Letter on page 4)-drop the handicap
to a new low, create great memories with friends and,
for a few, win one of our great MGA amateur championships.
While only some have the skill
set to win a state or national championship,
in this great game of golf we're
always competing-whether it's against
ourselves, " Old Man Par, " or perhaps
our friends in weekly matches or club
and league handicapped events. To me,
it's what makes this game so much fun.
Each round, each hole is a new competition
and opportunity to succeed. While
integrity is the true spirit of the game,
competition has been with us since golf
began in Scotland. I, for one, am again
hopeful that this spring I'll find that magic swing thought
that will carry me through the season of competition.
The MGA has been in the business of running championships
for more than 100 years. Our staff is considered
the gold standard across the country and something we
should be very proud of, but the only way our events are
successful is through our network of volunteers and the
countless hours they provide. We are always looking for
new volunteers, so if you are looking for an avenue for
involvement, please contact the MGA office. We have a
wonderful training program and many opportunities to
help serve, whether it's with junior, women's or men's
championships, regional qualifiers or even course-rating
teams. There are many ways to help give back to the
game-just ask us.
Our staff is considered the gold
standard across the country
and something we should be
very proud of.
Tom Ryan's article in this issue (page 39) highlights
the USGA's investment for greater sustainability and improved
water usage across the country. It's a tremendously
important and growing issue for all courses, but has
especially been highlighted by the drought in the southeastern
and western states over the past couple of years.
But Minnesota is not immune. As I write this, about 80
percent of the state is suffering from moderate drought.
Please take the time to learn about the issue and what
challenges your golf course superintendent faces. I'm sure
they would welcome the opportunity to educate. As we
saw at last year's USGA Open championships at Pinehurst,
brown and firm is beautiful. If we are to survive as a
game across the country, we must be good stewards.
Enjoy our early spring and grab those clubs!
