well-treed and almost a twin
challenge to Phalen Park in
St. Paul. Hawley also features
three practice holes, a putting
green and driving range.
Meadows Golf Course is
a Joel Goldstrand-designed
muni in Moorhead, with difficulty
that almost matches
the Lakes Course at Ruttger's
Bay Lake Lodge. Moorhead
Country Club is a private on
the north side of town. A recent
renovation inspired by
Red River flood protection
added some pond challenges
plus an island green, and its
test is similar to Hale Irwin's
design, The Jewel Golf Club
in Lake City.
Goldstrand also did the
Moorhead muni Village
Green Golf Course, with the
first nine in 1981 and the
finishing holes in 1994. This
well-maintained track is a
great challenge with a hefty
course and slope rating that
matches Stillwater Country
Club. It's possibly the toughest
on this tour.
Stalker Lake Golf Course
is a scenic nine-hole track
near Dalton. A relatively new
MGA member, it is yet unrated
but caters to all levels
of golfers.
At Fergus Falls, Pebble
Lake Golf Course was
designed by Paul N. Coates
in 1941 (see sidebar on page
15), and is known for slick
greens and a challenge comparable
to Edinburgh USA.
South of Fergus Falls and
I-94, Elbow Lake's Tipsinah
Mounds Golf Course-another
Goldstrand creation-
is a neat free-flowing course
thats rating numbers match
with Minneapolis' muni,
Columbia.
The finishing course on
this tour is the muni Wheaton
Country Club. Don't
sell this nine on the Mustinka
River short, because
it's rated tougher than the
executive nine at Inverwood.
