The PGA St. Paul Open
was held at Keller
Golf Course between
1930-1956, sans fi ve
years. Those were the
days when great names
such as Jimmy Demaret
(1948 winner), Mike
Souchak (1956 and
1958), Sam Snead
(1937) and Raymond
Floyd (1965) dominated
the greens.
Donny Fitch, 92, grew
RIVER OAKS GC
BROOKVIEW GC
up near Keller, caddying
there and playing in the
St. Paul Open Pro-Am in
1946 with Gene Littler.
Fondly looking back
at his time at Keller,
Fitch recalls that 1946
winner Henry Ransom
lived across the railroad
tracks from the course
" in a little cabin with his
family. " He also remembers
the Peter's Wieners
Wienermobile in later
years. " I sat in it! "
Keller's caddies could

was in great condition and the
weather was excellent, " says

the Ryder Cup.

play on Mondays, " but
we all had only one or
two clubs, " Fitch says, so
the members would loan
the caddies their clubs.
" Boy, we really loved
playing the same course
as all those golf greats. "
In his playing days at
Indian Hills Golf Club,
Fitch was a 1 handicap,
shooting his age more
than 50 times, and
owned several restaurants
in St. Paul.
