SEVERAL GOLF COURSE RENOVATIONS ADD A NEW LOOK TO
AREA GOLF THIS SEASON.

T
he golf course building boom of the past has given
way to renovations that keep architects busy and
courses vital and profi table.
This spring in Minnesota, there are several course
renovations taking place, ranging from rebuilding an old clubhouse
to ripping up a 27-hole track and transforming it into a
brand new 18-hole gem. While no " new courses " were added,
the changes promise an exciting new look to Twin Cities golf.
BRAEMAR GOLF COURSE
Braemar Golf Course in Edina, with its 27 holes and
large driving range, has always been a go-to course for
golfers in the area. So, some heads turned when the city
of Edina announced a major renovation to the venerable
old track. But golf is changing, and Braemar wanted to
be ready to change with it. Therefore, the course is converting
to 18 holes, expanding the driving range and changing up the
executive course.
" To be stronger going into the future, we thought it would
be better to concentrate on our core asset, which is the 18-hole
golf course, and make that the best we could, instead of throwing
money at the Clunie 9 to possibly make it better, " general
manager Joe Abood says. " We have the traffi c, we have the customers
and we have the location to fi ll 18 holes. And it does
cost less money to operate it. By doing it this way, we will be
able to start funding our own capital improvements for the future
and [make it] a sustainable golf facility as a whole, as opposed
to patching here and there. "
Braemar fi nished renovating the driving range and par 3
course-designed by local architect Kevin Norby-last year,
and those projects will be ready for golfers this spring.
" The driving range and the Academy 9 have exceeded our
expectations, " Abood says. " We changed the executive to
a par 3, made it a little more playable and saw immediate
results out there. It's been very well received. A lot of
our leagues didn't want to regroup somewhere else, so
we're expecting almost 200 rounds a day on the Academy
9-pre-booked. "
On the 18-hole course, slated for completion in August 2018,
there was a lot of deferred maintenance over the years-refurbished
greens, upgraded drainage in the bunkers-so Braemar
went with a total course renovation. Using space from the Clunie
9 and renovating the other 18 holes, the course will be easier
to manage and maintain, and more playable for every golfer.
" We're going to have wider fairways, " Abood says. " In the
past, for forward tee boxes, we just put some markers in the
