urt Soine has been scaling back on his art business
and " doing what I want, you know? " Which
mostly revolves around his grandkids (he has
four) and golf. " My 6-year-old granddaughter
has clubs, and I have hopes, " he quips.
Soine has owned and operated River Bank Folk Art in
Granite Falls since 1983, creating hand-carved folk art, home
accessories, rustic twig tables and more. The Raymond native
(his wife, Paula, is from Granite Falls) competed in football,
wrestling and baseball in high school. He took up golf in his
20s but only played sporadically. Since scaling back toward
retirement, however, he has been playing the game with a
vengeance, making his way to the course four to fi ve times
a week.
A golf nomad, Soine has teed it up at several courses in the
area: Granite Run, Cottonwood, Marshall and The Crossings
at Montevideo. About Granite Run, he says, " I played it many
times when it was a nine with narrow fairways and lots of
trees. Now the 18 is really nice. " Granite Run's restaurant is
his favorite eatery in town. Soine's assessment of Marshall
Golf Course is that it's " really nice, right up there with other
courses in the area. "
He and his golf cronies play in an annual charity event at
Hawk Creek Country Club in Raymond to benefi t high school
sports. They've also played courses in Renville, Glenwood,
Benson and Alexandria.
Queried about his handicap, Soine utters the phrase that
every club pro dreads at an event: " I'm a bogey golfer, so I'm
about an 18. " However, he's a member of the Timberwolf Golf
Club, an MGA member club without real estate.
Asked about a mentor, Soine says, " Not really a mentor, but
I was infl uenced by an artist from whom I took classes. " The
artist, Keith Mueller, is a decoy maker and painter, " and it's a
medium I'm very interested in. "
In fact, that's the point where Soine's art and golf somewhat
converge. " When playing golf, I appreciate the hues of the
landscape, but more so the birds and waterfowl on a course,
which I enjoy transferring to my studio carvings and painting, "
he says.
