outh on Course, a junior golf program launched
in Northern California some dozen years ago, is
generating buzz among state and regional golf
administrators, says Joel Comstock, a longtime MGA
staff member and the YoC director for Minnesota.
For $15, any youth golfer age 6 to 18 years can join
the program at youthoncourse.org and play golf for $5
or less. In Minnesota, YoC golfers have access to a growing
list of more than 60 local public golf courses offering
green fees for $5 or less.
Minnesota, along with Wisconsin and Iowa, is among
more than two dozen states that collectively account for
more than 1,000 participating courses nationwide, where
YoC members can play for $5 or less. Some noteworthy
national YoC facilities include Chambers Bay, Pinehurst
Resort, Poppy Hills and Spanish Bay.
" Youth on Course is a lot like sandlot baseball for
getting kids and their families on the golf course and
introducing them to the game at their own pace, " says
Comstock, adding, " it complements the many other successful
junior programs in our state. "
By year's end, he expects to see 2,500 YoC members and
70 participating golf courses in Minnesota.
The program's expenses are subsidized by the
Minnesota Golf Association through Minnesota Golf
License Plate sales, with additional fundraising efforts
aimed at creating a sustainable model in Minnesota, says
Comstock.
