Oh, What a Relief!

How to find proper relief area when putting your ball back in play.
ow that the hullaballoo over the new knee-height
drop procedure is behind us, it's a good time to
review a related change. The 2019 Rules of Golf
introduced a new concept involving the relief area that is used
to put a ball back into play under certain circumstances. The
specific space is determined by the following three factors:
1. The reference point, meaning the point from which the size
of the relief area is measured;
2. The size of the relief area, which is either one or two club
lengths from the reference point, and with certain limits;
3. Its location, which may be limited in one or more ways,
including when:
a. It is only in certain defined areas of the course, such as
only in the general area, or not in a bunker or a penalty
area;
b. It isn't nearer to the hole than the reference point, or it
must be outside a penalty area or a bunker from which
relief is being taken;
c. It is where there is no interference (as defined in the
particular Rule) from the condition from which relief
is being taken.
Notes: Taking lateral relief from a red penalty area (see Rule
17) involves measuring two club-lengths from the reference
point; in most cases, all other relief areas for penalty area
relief are measured from a reference point using one clublength
(except returning to the tee for stroke-and-distance
relief).
In using club-lengths, the player may measure across a
ditch, hole or the like, and directly across or through an object
such as a tree, fence, wall, tunnel, drain or sprinkler head, but
not through ground that naturally slopes up and down.
A player's club-length is determined by the length of his or
her longest club in the bag (with the exception of a putter).
