state tournament. Down one member
from last season's squad, the
Cardinals, led by junior Braeden
Sladek, remain contenders.
Gaining valuable state tournament
experience in 2021, Eastview
and Farmington, who fi nished
third and fourth last season, respectively, should return to form
in 2022. The Lightning lost Teddy Kaste, who fi nished 17th last
season, but will get a jolt from juniors Joey Rohlwing and Jack
Hanson. The Tigers are powered by the talented junior tandem
of Kyler Schwamb and Zach Rouleau, both of whom fi nished
11th at last year's championship.
The girls from Alexandria cruised to 22-stroke victory over
Maple Grove last season for the school's fi rst team title since
1992. Better yet, all six starters will return for the Cardinals:
Senior Cora Larson opened last year's tournament with a round
of 72, on her way to ninth-place fi nish at 150, while
junior Hannah Boraas fi nished one
shot back in 11th. The Cardinals
will get help once again from senior
Lauren Rebrovich and junior Aisling
O'Connor.
Led by the McCauley sisters, Isabella and Reese,
Simley fi nished third at the Class AAA tourney in 2019, while
Isabella notched the individual
title as a freshman. Isabella
McCauley missed the section and state tournament last year
after qualifying for the U.S. Women's Open, but Reese fi red a
fi nal-round 69 at Bunker Hills to earn medalist honors by one
stroke over Roseville's Olivia Salonek to become the second
straight McCauley to win an individual title. With two of the
state's top golfers returning for the 2022 season, Simley will be
in contention at year's end.
Like Alexandria, Eden Prairie returns all six starters from last
season's state tournament. The Eagles will build on strong fi nishes
at last year's tournament by senior Emma Davies (23rd),
and junior Rose Baynes (31st). Senior Katelyn Zick and sophomore
Paige Trebil add depth to an Eagles lineup that should
compete with the state's best.
CLASS AA
Behind medalist Sam Baker, the Cloquet Lumberjacks earned
the fi rst team title in school history last June, defeating TotinoGrace
by 18 strokes at Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan. This season,
the Lumberjacks will be without three of their starters from
the 2021 team, including Baker. Cloquet will need strong performances
from junior Karson Patten and senior Jacob Walsh to
contend in Section 7AA in 2022.
Andrew Ramos and Peyton Savageau were the backbone of
a young Totino-Grace squad who quickly made noise in the
Northwest Suburban Conference in 2021, leading the Eagles to
the Section 4AA championship. Minus one player from the 2021
team, Ramos and Savageau will once again get help from junior
Nate Appelhof and sophomore Charlie Givens.

Expect Roseau to make a repeat appearance in Jordan in 2022.
The Rams lost one starter from last season, but return a talented
core of juniors in Teagan LaPlante and Max Wilson, as well as
senior Markus Nelson.
In one of the most dominating performances in recent memory,
the Lake City girls ran away with the Class AA team title
by 44 strokes last season. Returning fi ve letterwinners for the
2022 season, the Tigers will look for a second straight team title
behind individual runner-up Jordana Windhorst-Knudsen and
sophomore Ella Matzke, who fi nished 10th last year.
Led by junior Grace Petzold, the Providence Academy Lions
have a strong chance to advance from Section 5AA and return to
the state, despite losing Mae Monette, who contributed a 26thplace
fi nish.
Much like state last year, Lake City and Providence Academy
will be chased once again by Fergus Falls, Minnewaska and
Pequot Lakes.
