Phil Ebner, chair of the Mr. and Ms.
Minnesota Golf committee, says he is
very pleased with the progress of the
annual senior award since its inception
in 2016 with winners Kate Smith
(Detroit Lakes) and Andrew Israelson
(Motley-Staples).
" We have established a yearly
award all seniors strive to win. The
Annual award showcases the very
best talent on the prep and amateur
level in the state, " Ebner said.
CLASS A
The boys from Fertile-Beltrami High School captured
the fi rst team title in school history last June in at Pebble
Creek Golf Club, fi nishing 13 strokes better than Legacy
Christian Academy. The Falcons were led by then-junior
Rylin Petry, who carded a fi nal-round 76 to claim a onestroke
victory for the Class A individual title. Good news
for the Falcons, and perhaps bad news for the rest of Class
A, all six starters from last year's state tournament team will
return for the 2022 season. Along with Petry, the Falcons
will be supported by junior Ethan Finseth and sophomore
Masen Nowacki, both of whom fi nished inside the top-15
at the 2021 State tournament.
The girls from Lac Qu i Parle Va lley, led by Sarah
Halvorson, claimed a 26-stroke victory over Park Christian
a year ago. The Eagles are front runners once again, losing
just one starter from last season's lineup.
 
Northfi eld's Nate Stevens made his
fi rst appearance at the Class AAA
state championship in 2019 as a
sophomore, where he placed ninth.
Since then, Stevens has solidifi ed his
spot as one of the state's top golfers,
most recently with his two-stroke victory
last June to claim medalist honors
at Bunker Hills for the Class AAA
individual title.
Mason Roloff, of Spring Lake Park
High School, fi nished six shots back
of Stevens at last year's championship
to place fourth. Roloff enters
the 2022 season as one of the
state's best junior players, winning
the Minnesota State Junior Boys'
Championship in 2021.
New London-Spicer's Peyton
Section championships for the 2022 high
school golf season will begin May 24, followed by
the state tournament June 14-15 at Bunker Hills
Golf Club (Class AAA), Ridges at Sand Creek
(Class AA) and Pebble Creek Golf Club (Class A).
Coahran led the Wildcats to a Class
AA state tournament berth in 2021,
where he'd fi nish third individually.
He fi nished the 2021 season ranked
No. 25 and would card a pair of top-10
fi nishes at state events following the
2021 high school season.
Rylin Petry entered the fi nal week
of the 2021 season ranked No. 26
in the state before helping FertileBeltrami
to the team title. He edged
out one of the state's top golfers,
Brett Reid, to earn medalist honors
in 2021 at Pebble Creek.
 
If the 2022 season resembles her freshman
and junior seasons, Simley High
School's Isabella McCauley is a clear
favorite to win. Breaking a state tournament
record with a 10-stroke win
during her freshman season, McCauley
was the state's top-ranked player for a
majority of the 2021 season.
Alexandria High School's Cora
Larson will also look to contend for
the prize of top senior golfer this season
after leading the Cardinals to a
commanding 22-stroke victory in the
Class AAA championship last June.
The North Dakota State University
commit carded back-to-back rounds
of 75 to place ninth. Perham High
School's Mallory Belka opened the
2021 state championship with a
round of 73 at Ridges at Sand Creek
last June and followed it with a 3-over
75 to cruise to a nine-stroke victory at
the Class AA championship in Jordan.
Continuing the Halvorson tradition
in Class A, Lac Qui Parle
Valley's Sarah Halvorson followed in
her older sister's footsteps last season
by leading the Eagles to the Class A
team title, while earning co-medalist
honors individually at Pebble Creek
in Becker. Rachel Halvorson won
back-to-back titles for the Eagles
in 2018 and 2019. Beginning her
high school varsity career as an
eighth-grader, Chanhassen High
School's Madi Hicks can add her name
to the list of seniors to watch in 2022.
Hicks placed fourth at the state tournament
during her fi rst appearance
in 2018.
Making a move to Class AAA for
the 2022 season, Detroit Lakes High
School's McKenna Mallow fi red a
fi nal-round 71 last June to climb the
leaderboard on her way to a seventhplace
fi nish at Bunker Hills.
