hey say the wind is hard
to judge swirling above the
trees at Augusta National's
No. 12. Those driving at the par-3 third at Southbrook face
a similar challenge. From the elevated blue tees, the shot is all
carry over wetlands to a slightly less-elevated green, fronted
by a retaining wall 30 yards out. The prevailing wind (sometimes
two clubs-worth) is in your face, but you may never
know it because of the surrounding trees.
" There are trees along the back of the green and trees behind
the tee box that block the wind, " says superintendent
Brian Peterson. " If you get a shot up into the air, the fl ag may
not show the wind and you may not feel it, but your ball will
defi nitely move once it clears the treetops. " -J.O.

" Take an extra club because of the wind.
It's a tricky chip back, but it's a lot safer to
be long than short. If you are one club short,
you'll have to deal with the retaining wall. "

he challenging fi nishing hole at Olivia GC is about
to get tougher. With numerous mature trees along
the fairway-particularly on the left side-already
making for a tight landing area, the course is adding a frontright
greenside bunker this summer.
" There is a real narrow approach, " says manager Ben Baumgartner.
" Your drive has to land in about a 20-yard area for
a real clean shot at the green. "
Once there, the test eases a bit. The smallish, old-style
push-up green is sloped slightly back to front and can help
long approach shots come back to the hole.
" Hit a 220-yard drive to the optimal landing area, then
a nice wedge for an approach, and hopefully, one-putt for
a birdie, " Baumgartner says. Simple, right? Until the new
bunker arrives. -J.O.
