THE PRESIDENT'S DESK
Allied With the Best
By Robert H. Tennant
A
s I sit down to write this column, The Masters
has just concluded. The winter's doom and
gloom, which centered on the economy and
the thought that the cold would never end, has come to
a quick halt with the early spring and the realization that
people still love to play golf.
Since becoming president of the Minnesota Golf Association,
the question I'm asked most is, " What do you do? "
The work of the president has little to do with playing the
game, but it does afford rewarding opportunities to meet
and play golf with members of our allied associations.
My season started at the Spring Meeting of the Minnesota
Section of the PGA. It was a great chance to see
the many friends I have in the golf business. Both the
MGA and the PGA are committed to promoting the
game of golf in Minnesota, individually and cooperatively.
The playgolfminnesota.com website and Play
Golf Minnesota Week (April 27-May 3) are examples
of that cooperation.
The Minnesota and Minnesota
Women's Public Golf associations represent
MGA members who play public
golf courses. Both associations have
taken a grassroots approach to growth,
emphasizing the importance of their
members recruiting new people to participate
in the organizations' social and
competitive events.
The Spring Meeting of the Minnesota Women's Golf
Association was held on a brisk morning at Baker National
Golf Club. (I've learned that there are golfers
more enthusiastic than myself who are willing to play
in frosty conditions!) The MWGA provides a competitive
schedule of tournaments, including the Women's
State Amateur, and a number of social events for women
of all skill levels.
The Turf Grass Forum was held at Midland Hills Country
Club in early May. Organized by the Minnesota Golf
Course Superintendents Association, this annual event
is an opportunity for all those interested in how we can
manage the turf grass at our respective clubs. In the past,
the forum has dealt with disease issues, budgets and other
challenges facing golf course and turf managers. It is a
prime example of how cooperation and collaboration can
improve both the game and the environment.

May also offered an opportunity for me to participate
in the Evans Founders Day golf outing. The Evans
Scholars Foundation is a story in and of itself, but if
you've ever wondered how golf can enhance the lives
of young individuals, simply sit down and talk to an
Evans Scholar.
Lastly, May 4 found me at MGA Volunteers Day, hosted
by Medina Golf & Country Club and Jeff Drimel,
president of the Minnesota Section of the PGA. You need
only look at the people who were in attendance there-
volunteers who have given their time, money and commitment
for the good of the game-to know why the
MGA is a great organization.
The MGA, which represents nearly 80,000 individual
members and more than 400 golf clubs, exists primarily to
foster the game of golf, and much of our success depends
on strong relationships with our allied associations.
