he next time you see someone in your foursome fi ddling
with a cell phone on the course, you might want
to be cordial when speaking to them about it. They
may be looking up a golf ruling to help you out.
In January, the USGA announced the launch of the offi cial
application for the 2010-11 editions of the Rules of Golf for the
iPhone and iPod Touch. So you may be seeing more golfers using
cell phones this season.
" It's an ever-expanding area of the world with everything digital
and at your fi ngertips-when you want and when you need it, "
says Jeff Hall, managing director of rules and competitions for the
USGA. " In that regard, the Rules of Golf is very important content
for golfers to have, so the opportunity to bring that information
into a medium that was devoid of it just made sense. "
In addition to the Rules of Golf, the application (which is also
available for BlackBerry and Android phones) includes Decisions
on the Rules of Golf and Rules of Amateur Status. It costs $3.99,
and its navigational ease makes it attractive to golfers.
