" Certainly the reaction from the marketplace has been favorable,
and we are excited about that. "
The USGA (which, together with the Royal & Ancient of St. Andrews
[R&A], are the governing bodies of golf) pursued this project
on its own. Therefore, the application is available only within
the USGA's rules jurisdiction of the United States and Mexico-
which includes more than half of the world's golfers. Hall hopes
the application's ease of navigation will help the organization get
in front of a new group of golfers.
" Some of those folks who download it might not be aware that
the USGA, in partnership with the R&A, are the rules-making
bodies for golf in the world, " says Hall. " They might not even
have known who to contact for the hard copy of the Rules book.
But with the ease of being able to get that information-with the
download-we might be reaching a segment of the golf population
that we otherwise may not have been able to reach. "
The Rules of Golf application also features an e-mail component
that allows golfers with a question to contact the USGA. The
USGA gets more than 15,000 rules questions annually, and while
they can't possibly answer them all in real time (that won't change
with the new application), they do respond to them.
So, will this new immediate access to the USGA through the
Rules of Golf application result in even more questions? " We have
no way of knowing that yet, " Hall says. " If at the same time next
year 15,000 questions becomes 22,000, we will know that something
is up there. Conversely, maybe people will find an answer
with the app so that they won't need to pose the question. "
