Minnesota Golfer - Summer 2010 - 26
( Metro Tour: Part 2
(see sidebar) redesigned the course
with 18 new holes; it opened in 1921.
Several signifi cant golf milestones have
been marked at Interlachen, including
Bobby Jones's famous " skipped lily pad
shot " to the fairway during the 1930
U.S. Open. Interlachen also hosted the
2002 Solheim Cup and the 2008 U.S.
Women's Open.
Five years after Interlachen's debut,
fi ve members of the Minneapolis Athletic
Club teamed up to create the Minneapolis
Golf Club, with nine holes
on what is now Golden Valley G&CC.
Later that year, they moved the club to
St. Louis Park; noted Scottish architect
Willie Park, Jr. laid out the new track
and converted a farmhouse to a clubhouse.
Three years later Ross was retained
to re-route the course to make
way for a new clubhouse.
In 1919, a gaggle of University of
Minnesota professors convened to plan
a golf course adjacent to the University's
St. Paul campus. With golf's popularity
spiking after World War I, these
academics persuaded Seth Raynor, who
was hard at work on Somerset CC in
Mendota Heights at the time, to lay out
their new course. As the member roster
fi lled with non-academics, the University
of Minnesota Golf Club needed a
new name; in 1922, it became Midland
Hills CC.
Somerset CC, meanwhile, became
one of the metro's most exclusive clubs.
It was renovated and re-routed by Canadian
Stanley Thompson in 1950. The

course was the idea of four disgruntled
Town & Country members who had
four groups ahead of them on the fi rst
tee one day. One of those was St. Paul
banker Charles Gordon, who was president
of Somerset for the fi rst 18 years.
A trip to the country identifi ed the site
for the golf course, which has never had
tee times. Somerset is also arguably the
original home of the Bootleg cocktail
(see sidebar).
N DONALD ROSS: PROLIFIC DESIGNER
World famous golf course architect Donald Ross had his creative hands
on fi ve metro privates. Ross was considered a master at fi tting golf courses
into their natural landscapes. He was born in Dornach, Scotland, in 1872, and became employed
in the golf shop at St. Andrews as a teen. He studied the game under the tutelage of Old
Tom Morris. It wasn't long before Ross was lured to the United States, becoming the fi rst pro at
Pinehurst Resort in South Carolina, where he remained his entire career. At the same time, he
began designing golf courses. In Minnesota, Ross fashioned the courses at White Bear Yacht
Club, The Minikahda Club, Interlachen and Woodhill and re-routed the layout of the Minneapolis
Golf Club. Ross died in 1948, leaving a legacy of 400-plus course designs.

N COUNTRY CLUB
COCKTAIL
The Bootleg cocktail was dubbed
" Minnesota's signature country club cocktail "
by the alt-weekly City Pages-and
City Pages is probably correct. The cocktail, which
blends vodka with citrus and fresh mint, is well known at
Twin Cities privates and not so much elsewhere. The recipe
varies from venue to venue, but essentially it's 1-1 1/2 oz.
vodka, 2-3 oz. mix (most use lemonade or a lemonadelimeade
blend, some use sweet and sour; and muddled or
blended fresh mint); 1-2 oz. soda (some use 7Up); served in
a pint glass fi lled with ice (some blend it to a smoothie).
At least four metro country clubs claim to have originated
the sweet summer refresher:
sWoodhill, by a bartender during Prohibition, invented for
a men's card club
s The Minikahda Club, by bartender Danny Stevens
s White Bear Yacht Club, where members are emphatic
that it was born
s Somerset, where club historian Charlie Mahar says it's
" defi nitive " that the Bootleg was invented during Prohibition
by bartender/greenskeeper Al Dunst. The 'bootleg'
booze at the club tasted so bad that Dunst had the idea to
mask the bad taste with mint.
