Windsong Farm is the brainchild of golfers who cherish the game's ancient origins, a casually elegant club. TOTTON P. HEFFELFINGER: HEART OF HAZELTINE N Totton P. Heffelfi nger was the founder of and inspiration for Hazeltine National GC. He was president of the MGA in 1932, on the board of directors of the Western Golf Association from 1939 to 1946, and was the only native Minnesotan to become president of the USGA (Reed Mackenzie, the other Minnesota resident to serve as USGA president, was born in Brooklyn, N.Y.). Heffelfi nger hired Robert Trent Jones to fashion Hazeltine's demanding layout; Jones's son Rees Jones tweaked it before the 1991 U.S. Open Championship. Heffelfi nger was instrumental in luring the Walker Cup Matches to Minikahda in 1957, the fi rst time the Walker Cup had been played west of the Mississippi. And as general chair of the 1966 U.S. Women's Open and the 1970 U.S. Men's Open Championships, Heffelfi nger established Hazeltine's credentials as a major championship venue. Heffelfi nger's home was on the 10th fairway at Hazeltine. He died at the age of 88 in April 1987. www.mngolf.org Summer 2010 MINNESOTAGOLFER 27 PHOTO BY W.P. RYAN PHOTO BY W.P.
