for Pros at MGA/PGA
Cup Matches
At the 34th MGA/PGA Cup Matches at
Rush Creek Golf Club on May 25, it was
the PGA all the way.
" We were hanging in there, " says Pat
Vincelli, one of the MGA's amateur senior
players. " Then (Mankato GC golf professional
Mike) Zinni hit his second shot to
one inch at 17, and that was it for us. "
Zinni defeated Vincelli 3 and 1 in their
singles match, and the team of Zinni and
Brad Schmierer won their four-ball match
against Vincelli and Gary Johnson, the defending
MGA Senior Players' champion,
4 and 3.
Basically, the PGA won the holes that
mattered the most. As an example, it appeared
that the MGA's Thomas Campbell
and J.T. Johnson were going to sweep
The 2010 MGA team at the 34th MGA/PGA Cup Matches
all four of the points in their foursome,
against Chris Bailey and Brent Snyder.
The two ams were leading in both singles
matches and were 1 up in the four-ball.
Campbell did get a point for his 2 and
1 singles victory over Bailey. But Snyder
birdied the last two holes, turning a
2-down defi cit against Johnson into a tie,
and transforming a 1-down defi cit into a
victory in the team game. So the pros ended
up getting 2 1/2 of a possible 4 points.
" I guess that's what they're supposed to
do, " Johnson said. " They're pros. "
In the women's matches, Claudia Pilot
got the only point for the MGA, with a 5
and 4 victory over Lori Money.
When it was over, the PGA had won
26.5 to 13.5. The pros now lead the series,
which began in 1977 (with an MGA victory),
25-7-2.
