(tips from the pros ) Swinging Freely By Michael Turnbull Photos by Matt Seefeldt W hen you swing the clubhead in a true free-swinging motion, it acts like a pendulum-a repeating arc with a smooth, gradual, unhurried acceleration of force that always generates maximum speed at the bottom. Watch a child on a swing; it starts out smoothly from the top and is fastest at the bottom. The key is to feel the weight of the clubhead at the end of the shaft. As golf legend Bobby Jones said, " The one idea that a golfer must always keep in mind is that his only job is to swing the clubhead. If he does this, striking the ball will take care of itself. " Michael Turnbull, a PGA Professional, teaches Mindful Golf at Brookview Golf Course and the University of Minnesota Les Bolstad Golf Course. The clubhead always generates maximum speed at the bottom of the arc. 12 MINNESOTAGOLFER Summer 2011 www.mngolf.orghttp://www.mngolf.org
