she adds. " He put several young
people through college. He enjoyed
his wealth and shared it all. "
Ramey remembers being impressed
by her grandfather's trophies.
" They were in the basement of
the little house they moved to after
they had to give up his big house
when his banks failed, " she says. " It
was a tiny house...there was a recreation
room, and one full end of
shelves was loaded with trophies-
crystal and sterling silver and platters
and pitchers. One was a martini
shaker trophy that was very unusual-an
actual martini shaker trophy
with a handle, and on top of the lid
was a golf ball. "
Of course, Fate apparently decreed
that the Tallmans hadn't suffered
enough indignity. Tallman's
trophies, which had been donated
to Willmar Country Club and
placed in storage there, were later
stolen and never seen again.
" I never heard D.N. complain
(unless it was a golf shot that went
bad), " wrote Larson, his former caddie.
" He was a very upbeat guy. Very
likeable. He was short of stature at
that time-kind of shuffl ed along.
He always looked forward to that
next shot. He was sharp as a tack,
fun to be with and knew a few jokes.
He was quick on the draw. "
Though Tallman stopped golfi ng
competitively in the early 1940s, he
continued to shoot his age even as
he approached his 80th birthday.
" By the time I started caddieing
for him, he had become a smaller
version of the athlete he had been, "
Larson wrote in a letter about Tallman.
" He used a wood as a cane
when he walked around the course.
Even though they had electric carts
at that time, he chose to walk. As I
look back, I'm sure he did this to
keep his strength up.
When I caddied for him, he
couldn't hit the ball a great distance,
but he made up for it with accuracy, "
Larson added. " He did shoot his
