What would compel the green committee at
Interlachen, a course loaded with great holes
that was designed by a legendary architect, has
a lofty place in the history of professional golf
and recently hosted the U.S. Women's Open,
to change one hole from a par 5 to a par 4?
" Because it was a par 4 when Donald Ross
designed it in 1916, " says Brian Silva, a New
Hampshire architect assigned to the project.
" That's what Ross's plan showed. And I think
as a par 4, there can be no question that it is
one of the greatest par 4s in the country. "
Silva spends a lot of his time restoring and
renovating old courses designed by legendary
architects such as Ross, C.B. Macdonald and
Seth Raynor. He was the lead architect when
the axis of Interlachen's fairway bunkers was
twisted to run perpendicular to the line of
fl ight in 2005. He saw the 11th hole and felt
that it could be improved.
" I'd like to say that I'm the only person
standing upright on the planet who said
that, " he says. " But a number of people
looked at the hole, and to a person everyone
said, 'Oh my gosh, look at what this is if we
just reveal what it used to be.' "
Silva was on to something. When Mike
Davis of the USGA came to Edina to preview
the course for the 2008 U.S. Women's
Open, he remarked what a great par-4 No.
11 would be. Then Interlachen brought in
architects Tom Lehman, Garrett Gill and
Ron Pritchard, plus LPGA player Barbara
Moxness. They all agreed.
" My position is that in no way should this
467-yard hole be maintained as a par 5, with
the exception of [for] the female club player, "
Lehman says. " It is my fi rm conviction
that this hole can be brilliantly bunkered in
a manner quite acceptable to Donald Ross,
and would then be a far better hole. "
Lehman's comments, plus those of the
other architects, were included on a website
fi lled with volumes of information for Interlachen
members. It included Ross's original
drawings for the hole, architects' suggestions
and drawings, and photos of the hole before
any changes paired with pictures adjusted to
show what it would look like after construction.
It was part of a campaign to encourage
members, who had foot the bill for changes
in 2005, to sign off on more.
" Our membership has embraced it, but it
was very controversial, " says Brad Sherman.
" It was a tough sell to a small group of members
who were passionate about not seeing it
happen. We had sort of a civil war going-a
classic club controversy. We decided to take
the emotion out of it and bring in a number
of professional opinions. Mike Davis was
very adamant about the changes and was
disappointed we couldn't get it done before
the 2008 U.S. Women's Open. "
Seeing the " after " photos on the website
turned the tide, Sherman says. The club
okayed removing a total of 13 trees around
