Anderson and Shon Earn Spots in U.S. Women's Open

A rain-soaked and long-playing Medina
Golf & Country Club did not slow amateurs

23. A day after tornados roared through
the Twin Cities, the pair claimed the two
available spots for the Women's Open,
which will take place July 7-10 at The
Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Anderson, a former two-time Minnesota
PGA Junior Girls champion and the U.S.
Junior Girls Champion in 2009, took top
honors by shooting 71-70-141. Anderson
said her tee-to-green game was good
at Medina, hitting 31 greens in regulation
during the qualifying, but her putting
needed some attention. As soon as she
signed her score card after the first round,
Anderson headed for the practice green.
" I made some long putts, " she said afterward.
" But I had a lot of chances for
birdies from closer range, and I would
have liked to make more
of those. I guess you always
feel that way. "

said she decided to play
in the qualifier at Medina

made sense to just come to Minnesota
from there. She played a couple of practice
rounds before the rains came.
" The course was a lot shorter in the
practice rounds, " she says. " As an ex " I

ample, I was hitting a lot of 8-irons and
7-irons then, and [on Monday] on those
holes I was hitting 5-irons and 4-irons. "
That didn't bother Shon, who is used
to longer courses. She will likely soon find
another long course at The Broadmoor.
